The Legacy of the Mountain Dwellers

Human presence in the Giant Mountains dates back to the Stone Age, but more intensive settlement began in the Middle Ages when Slavic tribes roamed the region. Over time, mining and glassblowing shaped the cultural and economic life. The so-called mountain spirits, known to the locals as Rübezahl, are deeply rooted in the region's superstitions and continue to shape local folklore to this day.

Natural Diversity

The flora and fauna of the Giant Mountains are as diverse as their terrain. Alpine areas, picturesque valleys, and pristine forests provide a habitat for numerous plant and animal species. National parks on both sides of the border protect this biodiversity, including the rare capercaillie or the mystical mist crows. Sněžka itself is part of the Krkonoše National Park, which has been declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Hiking Paradise Giant Mountains

The region offers a dense network of hiking trails for all levels of difficulty. Popular destinations include the source of the Elbe River, the meadows of Špindlerův Mlýn, or the bizarre rock formations of the Adršpach-Teplice Rocks. Sněžka itself can be reached via several paths, the crowning glory of which is the panoramic view from the summit. Hikers can enjoy the breathtaking views over the gentle hills and steep cliffs of the Giant Mountains on well-maintained trails.

Winter Sports

When winter swathes the Giant Mountains in thick blankets of snow, the area becomes a haven for skiing enthusiasts. The region boasts several renowned ski resorts equipped with modern facilities and various slopes catering to different skill levels.

The presence of ski schools, equipment rental services, and meticulously maintained pistes ensure a comprehensive and enjoyable skiing experience.
