Rudawy Janowickie

The Rudawy Janowickie, a small mountain range covering an area of about 90 km², is a hidden gem often overlooked by travelers. It offers impressive rock formations, breathtaking panoramas, a mystical castle in the forest, palaces, and colorful lakes.

Geological and Natural Aspects

Located in the southern part of Lower Silesia, near the town of Jelenia Góra, lies the Rudawski Landscape Park. This 157.05 km² conservation area encompasses the picturesque landscapes of the Rudawy Janowickie, the Sokole Mountains (Góry Sokole), the Karpnickie Hills, the Lead Mountains in the Kaczawskie Mountains, and the Lisie Mountains in the Kamienna Góra Basin.

Established on November 16, 1989, the park protects the natural mountain and river geo-complexes of the region. A highlight is the Bóbr River, which flows through the area, creating a stunning gorge landscape. The region is rich in rock formations made of granite, gneiss, amphibolites, greenstones, conglomerates, and features meadows of exceptional botanical diversity.

The Rudawski Park is home to 390 species of vascular plants (54 of which are protected), 203 species of vertebrates, and has 152 km of hiking trails. Although there are no nature reserves, the park encompasses four special protection areas under the Natura 2000 program, including "Góry i Pogórze Kaczawskie", "Rudawy Janowickie", "Stawy Karpnickie", and "Trzcińskie Mokradła".

Among the most significant sights are the Szwajcarka shelter, picturesque hiking trails, the Colorful Lakes (Kolorowe Jeziorka), the tragic history of Miedzianka, the Valley of Palaces and Gardens, and the ruins of Bolczów Castle. Additionally, the highest peak of the Rudawy Janowickie, Skalnik, is a must-visit for guests.
