Day Trip

Karpacz

Located in the southwestern corner of Poland, near the border with Czechia, Karpacz is a mountain town at the base of Śnieżka, the highest peak in the Karkonosze (Giant Mountains), Karpacz offers visitors a mix of scenic landscapes, historic sights, and outdoor adventures

Karpacz: Mountain Town At The Foot Of Śnieżka

History and Origins

Karpacz was founded in the 16th century, when the first settlers arrived in search of precious stones and medicinal herbs. Over time, it evolved from a small mining village into a spa destination, thanks to its pure mountain air and healing springs. In the 19th century, the town began to attract more visitors, and its development as a mountain resort took off.

Sights and Attractions

One of Karpacz’s most iconic landmarks is the Wang Church – a 12th-century wooden stave church originally built in Norway and brought to Karpacz in the 19th century. Surrounded by tall pines and mountain views, it’s a serene and atmospheric place, perfect for a quiet moment.

The town is also the starting point for hikes up Śnieżka, which stands at 1,603 meters. The summit offers panoramic views across Poland and the Czech Republic. The trail can be reached on foot or via a chairlift, making it accessible for both experienced hikers and casual visitors.

Families and curious minds will enjoy the interactive Karkonosze Museum of Nature and the quirky Gravity Anomaly spot, where optical illusions make balls appear to roll uphill.

A Note on Tourism

In recent years, Karpacz has become a popular tourist destination – especially during weekends and holidays. The town center can feel quite busy, and the commercial aspect isn’t for everyone. However, for those who prefer quiet moments and pristine nature, the surrounding forests, trails, and mountain peaks still offer plenty of space to escape and enjoy the peaceful side of the Karkonosze.

Nature and Outdoor Life

The real magic of Karpacz lies in its surroundings. The Karkonosze National Park, with its diverse trails, alpine meadows, and waterfalls, invites visitors to explore on foot or by bike. Whether you're hiking to the stunning Łomniczka Valley, picnicking by the Wild Waterfall, or simply breathing in the crisp mountain air – nature here is always close.

Your Trip to Karpacz

Karpacz is easily reachable from The Oak Lodge via a scenic drive through rolling hills and forested valleys. It’s ideal for a day trip filled with mountain views, light hiking, or exploring local culture. While the town itself may be bustling, the surrounding nature makes the journey more than worthwhile.
