A Place Of Healing, History & Mountain Air
Springs, Sovereigns, and Spa Culture
The story of Świeradów-Zdrój – once known as Bad Flinsberg – began in the 16th century, when local farmers discovered iron- and sulfur-rich springs. Their healing potential soon drew attention, and by the mid-18th century, the first bathhouse was established by Dr. Leonard Thurneyssen in 1768. The region’s reputation grew quickly, supported by the Prussian state, and by the 19th century, Świeradów-Zdrój had become one of Central Europe’s most celebrated spa destinations.
Its golden age began in 1899 with the construction of the grand wooden Spa House. With its intricate carvings, sweeping colonnades, and towering glass façade, it remains the town’s architectural centerpiece. Visitors came to promenade through the larchwood gallery, drink radon water, listen to chamber music, and enjoy the highland air. The clientele ranged from aristocrats and artists to working-class travelers from across Silesia, all seeking relief from ailments like rheumatism, respiratory problems, and nerve disorders.
Despite wars, regime changes, and shifting borders, Świeradów-Zdrój remained a place of healing. After World War II, the town was transferred to Polish administration and renamed – but the spa culture lived on. Today, it’s one of Poland’s most respected wellness destinations, offering a unique blend of heritage, tranquility, and therapeutic expertise.
Forests, Views, and Open Trails
But Świeradów-Zdrój is more than just a spa town. Nestled in the Izera Mountains, it’s also a hub for outdoor activity and gentle exploration. A modern gondola lift carries hikers and cyclists up to Stóg Izerski, the region’s signature peak, where panoramic trails stretch toward the Czech border and beyond. In winter, the area transforms into a calm and scenic ski and cross-country resort.
The sky walk – a spiraling ramp leading to a panoramic tower – is a must-see for nature lovers. Alongside it, you’ll find well-marked hiking paths, peaceful forest routes, and family-friendly attractions that highlight the area’s natural charm. Local museums, historic glassworks, and even a nostalgic narrow-gauge railway provide plenty to discover off the beaten path.
